Magic Lantern firmware for Canon HDSLR cameras has a new feature: High Dynamic Range imaging in motion. Since HDR always involves multiple exposures, it’s of limited value for shooting moving subjects. This will change when cameras can shoot 50 frames per second at 1080p. Most currently only record this fast at 720p.

This is a quick and dirty grading experiment from a near-future drama I am working on with screenwriter Ruth Greenberg and actor Maria Hodson.

I’m using Apple Color to pre-process the footage during the process of transcoding to ProRes, which has to be done prior to editing. I think adding a barely perceptible amount of film grain will force a complete rebuild of the image as it transcodes from 8-bit H.264 to 10-bit ProRes.

The great and wonderful Magic Lantern firmware hack provided 2.4:1 wide screen masking while shooting. Being able to compose in camera means we don’t have to recompose each shot in post. I’m such a fan of Magic Lantern I want to give them a big hug!
